Actions: The Best Teacher and The Best Learner

August 2, 2016

On social network, I stumble on to the following phrase:

“We should not worry about next generation, that they are not listening to us; But we should worry that they are observing us.”

Immediately, being a parent myself, this phrase started train of thoughts in my mind.

As a parent, I always wish my child to be a better Human Being. I try to teach her the qualities of good Human Being: to be responsible, humble, compassionate, lovable, etc…

But how can I be good a teacher? To be a good teacher, first I should learn what I want to teach, I should live what I want to teach. In short, to preach or teach anything to others, my life should demonstrate that teachings through my actions.

How is this possible?

There are three modes of learning: Auditory(listening), Visual(observing) and Kinesthetic(doing/practice/actions). The researchers have proven that what we learn through listening stays with us for short time than what we observe, and what we observe stay in our memory comparatively for short time than what we do. However, this does not mean we should avoid Auditory learning or Visual learning as they are equally important as Kinesthetic learning.

How did I learn to drive a car?  I was given instructions on how the car works and what I need to do to drive the car (Auditory Learning). Then I often sat in the passenger seat and observe the person in driving seat, how he/she drives the car (Visual Learning). Finally when I sat in the passenger seat and started driving (Kinesthetic Learning), I learned how to drive. Now practicing driving again and again, it has become my second nature and don’t even have to think while I drive. Driving has become my muscle memory (Kinesthetic memory). Now, I can even think of teaching someone how to drive as they can see me driving and trust on my driving lessons.

Now, going back to our basic question, how can I teach my kid to be a good human being ? For that I first need to learn and be a good human being.

How can I learn and who will teach me ?

First and foremost, you can learn from a teacher only when you have full trust and faith on your teacher. The teacher who himself/herself is a true example of a perfect human being. I can only think of my Satguru and the saints whom I trust and have faith to be my teacher when it comes to learning human values.

I have attended Samagams and listened the teachings of my Satguru. Through the technology, I’m able to listen teachings of Satguru over my phone or on my computer. I attend congregations every Sunday, listen teachings from saints. But then, have I learned what they are teaching me? Probably not all, because if you ask me on Monday, what I learned in Sunday’s congregation, I might not be able to recall it all. (Audible memory has smallest life span).

I watch Satguru practicing these teachings in real life. I saw saints following the teachings of Satguru in their routine life. I observe how the Satguru or saints respond in situations that are not ideal, I observe how they face the adversity. But then, how will I react in same circumstances? Probably not always the way I have learned and observed. May be because I don’t recall what I learned and what I observed when I’m in the same situation.(Visual memory has smaller life span).

So as in the example of driving a car, unless I use Kinesthetic learning, practicing what I’m learning and observing to be a good human being, I can never be a good human being. Unless I make it as my second nature, unless I make it my muscle memory, I can’t say I’m following the teachings of my Satguru, teachings of all the saints. (Kinesthetic memory stays with you forever)

Again, first I need to be a good human being, before I expect others or teach my daughter to be a good human being. She will learn from what I say to her and how I behave when she is observing me.

Unless my actions resonates with what I have learned, what I have observe from my teacher, I cannot be a teacher.

I’m capturing my thoughts in form of this blog as a reminder for myself on how can I improve myself? These thoughts are not for anyone but for me. Please bless me that I’m able to be true to my words and practice Humanity inside my home and outside my home.

Thank You.

Fight to stay at Top

July 20, 2011

Lot of hype already surrounding the test series between England and India, which will kick off tomorrow, July 21st @ 10 GMT. This is also called as 1st npower Test and will be played at one of the historical and most prestigious venue; a venue which every test cricketer dream to play at, the Lord, London. Stats just adds more fumes to the hype of this test match, it will be 2000th test match, 100th test match played between India & England, chance for Great Little Master to score 100th century and also a chance for 3 greats (Tendulkar, Dravid & Laxman) to tally their 100th combined test century.

Recent records and performance of India and England is doing justice to this hype. Neither team have lost a test series since 2009. India still demanding the respect from its critics as a top test nation. They will fight to retain their No. 1 spot in world cricket. Whereas England will try to justify their exponential growth in recent years against No. 1 Test nation. England are focused and have their goal within their sight. They will fight every inch to climb up the ladder and achieve their goal to be no. 1 in Test ranking.

Considering the favorable seaming wickets, their recent records, their in-form batting and bowling, experts are forced to predict that England will do just good enough to win series 1-0. India coming up from not so impressive test series against West-Indies. Long interval from Test cricket for many players and as they published Somerset happy to “bully” India in the practice match, no one will really argue against the expert’s opinion at the very moment. Also, they will be missing the most fearless & dominating batsmen of Test cricket, Virendra Shewag for at least first 2 test matches.

Everyone talking about the England’s bowling attack, which can be ranked as world’s top seaming attack in this green favorable conditions and India’s batting attack, undoubtedly the most experienced and strong batting line up. But no one talking about the England batting line up which is as good as India’s considering their recent form and amount of runs they scoring. Cook and Trott scoring heavily recently, Strauss trying to gain his forms back through great performance in practice match, Peterson has class in his name itself, Bell is proven resilient character with Morgan & Prior adding that boost with attacking approach. Also no one talking about the India’s bowling attack. This condition will favor India’s style of bowling more than anyone else. Zaheer gaining praises every time he steps on green field, Ishant showing his style in recent series against WI, Munaf/Praveen more controlled characters and Bhaji showing same turns and bounce in his bowling as in his nature.

England batsmen knows the conditions better and have skills to negate the swing. India will try to ask more questions with every delivery they bowl. But personally I believe it will all come down to how India’s strong batting face England’s attack in this seaming conditions ? There will be no Shewag initially to dominate and force bowlers to bowl at his strength. Indian openers will need to be more patient and should try to wear down the bowlers. Opening partnership has been a key for India’s success in test matches and this series cannot be any different.

Factors that can play big role in this series:

From England side

1. Cook’s big starts

2. Jimmy’s spells with new bowls

3. Playing Bhaji well on 4th & 5th day

4. Peterson’s contribution

From India side

1. Zaheer Khan’s dominance over Strauss

2. India’s opening partnership, not run wise but more importantly time wise

3. Sachin & Dravid capitalizing on the start

4. Laxman’s class against Swann

5. Dhoni’s contribution as a captain and more needed as a batsman

6. Raina/Yuvraj whoever plays will be deciding factor if India is better batting lineup among 2 teams

Hey how can I forgot India’s new coach. Fletcher, hopefully have mentally prepared team India for this assignment. He will be key for this long tour and controlling the nerves of India’s young talent at this level.

Really this will be exciting series and very evenly balanced series. This will be rare occasion when England is not clear favorite against a sub-continent team in their own backyard. Hope this series keeps up the hype it has created. Wish Indian Team All the Best and will pray for its success.

Go India Go !!

Thanks for reading.

Vision of Appreciation

June 1, 2011

Every creature in this universe strives for two basic things; strives to live and strives to be happy. Who do not want to live and who do not want to be happy? Economy and society is generous enough or you can say a GOD is generous enough to provide everyone (99% of living creatures) a minimum required things to live in this world. We all accept it or some will say, they earn their living, as their is no other choice to live. Good enough, but the same society or same GOD is also giving everyone enough to be happy and just look inside you and around, how many of us are happy ? How many of us have smile on their beautiful face ?

Not many as everyone complains or frowns for not achieving enough to be happy or things not happening as expected, to keep one happy. Why everyone do not get things which will keep them happy? The only answer to this is, the things which will make one happy are not constant. They keep changing and so do we keep running away from happiness.

In other words happiness is a state of mind and its choice of our mind to be happy or not to be happy. We choose not to be happy, as our mind is trained to be happy only if we get certain things which are not easily given. I was in state of happiness when I got my first bicycle, when I graduated from college, when I got my first job, when I got married, etc.. but my current state of mind is not making me feel as happy as I wish.

Lets try a different approach, lets train our mind to be happy for things we have right now in life. Lets stop our mind wandering thinking about future and things which will make you happy. Train the mind to be happy at every moment. How can it be possible? The best way is put glasses of appreciation on your mind. Lets appreciate each and everything we have in this life and be thankful for GOD for giving us such a precious human life.

Stop complaining about flight or train being late or seats in the plane are not comfortable or always a small child crying in the plane. Instead appreciate this great invention, which have made possible to travel from Mumbai to NewYork in 16-18 hours. Otherwise can you imagine ever traveling from Mumbai to NewYork? May be yes, but may have taken ages.

Stop complaining about the traffic you face during your everyday commute to office. Instead appreciate you have a job and you have a vehicle to get stuck in traffic. Ask your grand parents about their job and their commute to job.

Stop complaining about a quality of mango (Indian) you get in United States. Instead appreciate the efforts behind making it available for you. A farm in India or Mexico, someone picking it for you from the tree, putting it in boxes, making it travel across borders 10000 miles away and finally getting it here in this tiny store.

Stop complaining about the bad or slow network for your cell phones. Instead appreciate a device and service which is making possible to be in touch with your loving ones, without wires and you can see them on cam, take & share pics, record & share videos, text (sms, mms, what not..) and yes it shows the time as well 🙂

Stop complaining, stop taking things for granted and appreciate the things around you. Appreciate what this life has given you and feel happy because you are the special one to be blessed with this wonderful life.

If this all sounds stupid, take yourself in the era of your grand-grand-parents and imagine what your life looks like? You leaving in your town for entire life, doing the job what your father was doing, getting married to a person your parents choose for you. Now does this life gives a feeling of happiness?,  if yes I guarantee this is happening only  because your mind is in state of acceptance and appreciation.

Lets not live a life but live a Happy life. Let the smile on your beautiful face show your true inner happiness. Don’t forget this happy smile of yours can be a source for another happy smile around.

Thanks 🙂

I must win, but all others must lose !!!

May 5, 2011

It is strange, but exactly that is an approach we have mastered; “Its not just enough if I win, but all others must lose”. Agreed, its competitive world and we have to work hard and fight to sustain in this world. Unfortunately, our focus have changed from winning to making others lose.

If a question is asked to young parents, What you want your child to be, when he/she grow up? The answer can be broadly categories into:

1. 50% of them will answer, whatever he/she interested in. (but kids are not mature enough to know the interest, and this usually is influenced by parents thinking)

2. 49% will answer engineer or doctor (stereotype, that is how I grow up) and

3. If you do not fall into first 2 categories, I am curious to know what is your choice ?

Well this same question was asked to a poor lady from village near Pune, she replied “Good Human Being”. This is Choice 3, which unfortunately not even 1% of parents usually will answer. This answer can come only from a pure, innocent human soul who cares for humanity. We assume being good human is default and set our goal for either choice 1 & 2. However, hunger to achieve choice 1 & 2 overshadows the default implicit goal of becoming “Good Human Being”.

But this is not our fault, as we have been raised with the attitude, “Do everything you can to be on top, it doesn’t matter if you need to step on others.”  Unknowingly this attitude is fed right from school days. It starts with interviewing a 3 year old for admission, followed by ranking system from kindergarten and influenced by parents expectation from their child to be 1st in class. One incident at school soccer game, few kids waiting on sideline to replace injured player. Parent of one kid signaling her son to rush next to coach in order to get a chance to be in the game. The kid passionately runs towards coach, takes the place of another kid standing next to coach by pushing him aside.

Later same attitude changes to, “I am tall enough to reach top, but I will make sure I kick everyone while I reach top.” My wife’s friend, is in process of Medical school entrance and she is currently attaining several interviews at different schools. My wife asked her, “how are interviews going on?”.  She replied, “I am frustrated with the interviews and just wish this gets over soon. This is making me “Bad Human Being”, which I think I am not”. She continued, “when I am in interview room with other students, I am not only praying for my good performance, but I also pray for others bad performance.”

Another incident which reflects, we are more worried about others performance (in negative sense), rather caring for own. It was graded group assignment and we decided to have online discussion over school chat application. One student questioned, is it good to use school chat app, as other groups can see log of our chat? …. So what ? What will happen even if they see the log? Will it really affect your grade?

This so called competitive attitude has overlooked the fact that in today’s economy, others really do not have to lose for your success. There are plenty of space at Top for you as well as many others of similar caliber. Obviously if depends on your definition of being on Top. If its being successful in your profession, then spend some time looking analyzing the real successful people in your field, you will reveal the fact that none of them are successful at expense of other. If you are the group leader, I am sure there is enough opportunity and space for many working under you to be a leader of some other group. If you want to become a Manager, you can be one as your colleague too, working for different team or organization.

In fact personally I feel, sometimes this attitude of “I must win, but all others must lose” would really make you lose by not focusing on what you can do but on what you cannot control.

Truth or Perception

May 5, 2011

Shukr Hai Ki Shukr Hai

The unlimited expanse in which everything is located is called as SPACE. Each one of us is an object in this space or we can say space is one that has enveloped everyone of us.
Space and time will always be in a continuum and we experience their company at each and every moment as we move through process of life. This continuum of space and time ensures that we will never re-visit the experiences that we once go through.
We all have same space around us but everyone will describe it uniquely and differently, why? The difference is because each individual perceive the same space differently. No two people will experience the space in same way. Each experience is based on the “experiencer”; experiences which are based on the 5 senses, intellect, understanding and thinking.

Since childhood, we all are taught that one of the greatest virtue of life is to always speak the TRUTH. Based on the above premise that each of us perceives SPACE differently; further continuing on these lines of thoughts, we can evaluate what is “TRUTH” for each one of us? Truth is one which everyone believes is a fact or reality. But the problem with this is, each one of us believes the truth as what we individually experience via our senses, intellect, understanding and thinking. As you will agree that each one of us has been endowed with different sensibilities which can easily cloud our version of the truth. Hence if each one of us lives in our own made world of true experiences, we can never really in the true sense agree on a thing being absolutely TRUE. Imagine if everyone around me decided to call “real” red color as blue, I will perceive the color as blue and that will be a fact, a TRUTH for me. Thus actually “PERCEPTION BECOMES KING and our poor friend TRUTH is sadly irrelevant”.

I consider myself the most fortunate and blessed one. HH Sadguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj have blessed me with the actual TRUTH. SADGURU have shown the TRUTH, that everything is enveloped in this constant SPACE, in this NIRANKAR. The immense power of SADGURU’S teaching and HIS blessings have cleared the cloud of perception and have helped to witness the actual TRUTH. Blessings of SADGURU have helped to understand the weakness of the 5 senses, have helped to guide my intellect, understanding and thinking in the direction of reality. It has changed the perception of listening or looking things around me. SADGURU has decorated a path for each and every one of us. SADGURU assures that whoever follows this path will experience the same SPACE around them, the SPACE filled with Love, Humanity and Humbleness. I seek blessings of SADGURU to follow HIS path for rest of my life.

Its because of HIS grace and blessings we are achieving all the dreams in the life, but most important HE is helping us to be a Human Being.

This journey is awesome, I wish to continue enjoying this happiness and I wish this journey never ends.

Shukr Hai BABAJI, for providing a path for this blissful journey. BABAJI please bless the entire mankind to become a Human as YOU have envisioned.

Humbly,

Ravi

Let’s decorate one another not punish one another

May 5, 2011

DhanNIrankar ji!!

“Ek dusre ko saja de hum, Na ki ek dusre ko Saza de hum” which
translates to let’s decorate one another and not punish one another.
Babaji quoted above while addressing the congregation in Delhi, Ground
No 8, Near Nirankari Sarovar on May 1st,2011.

Babaji said that “Jab bhi hamme koi chota dikhayi deta hai to iska
matlab hai ki hum ya to use door se dekh rahe hain ya phir groor se
dekh rahe hain..” [When ever we feel that someone is smaller than us
it only means that we are looking from a distance or we are full of
our ego].

He said saints should have due respect for one another. He said its
mentioned in Avtar Bani that when ever a gurusikh meets another
gurusikh he feels blessed.

He said this path of Gurusikhi is not easy. It is full of challenges.
He further said “Khene waalon ka kya hai, sehne wale kamal karte
hain..” It is just like walking on the sword. He said Gursikh always
keeps patience, they never forget about their State of Gurusikhi
whatever may happen. He also gave an example of the sandalwood tree
which does not stop giving its  fragrance even when it is surrounded
by snakes all the time.

Lets all pray to Babaji, please bless us so that we can implement
these teachings in our life.
